Mubarak Mandi Palace, Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu is often described as the city of temples, but the city’s heritage is not limited to sacred sites alone. Scattered across Jammu are old royal buildings that speak of the Dogra period, and among them, Mubarak Mandi Palace stands out as one of the most important.

Mubarak Mandi is often described as being around 150 years old, and it once served as the principal palace complex of the Dogra kings of Jammu. Architecturally, it is an interesting blend, elements of Rajasthani, Mughal, and European styles appear across the complex. Today, several parts of the palace are used for government offices, so the experience is not of a silent, empty monument. It feels like a living space that has adapted to modern needs.

One section that visitors typically focus on is the Pink Hall, which now functions as a museum.

The museum is spread across two floors and has a straightforward, old-world charm. You will find portraits and paintings of the royal families, alongside displays of weaponry and armour such as bows, guns, cannons, and swords. There are also showcases of old vessels, ornaments, artefacts, and coins associated with the Jammu rulers. A few stone sculptures and inscriptions are part of the collection, and some modern paintings, often themed around Hindu traditions and kings, add a contrasting layer to the galleries.

If you want to see Jammu beyond temples, Mubarak Mandi is a worthwhile stop, especially for those who enjoy palaces and small museums.

Happy travelling.
