Mantalai Lake - Parvati Janma Bhoomi

Mantalai lake is a small village located near Patnitop hill resort in Jammu and Kashmir state of India. This place is a Hindu legendary site.

Mantalai lake has a small beautiful and old temple for Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva in this temple is named as Aparneswar. Near Aparneswar temple a small pond is located. Even though it is a pond, it is called as Mantalai lake. This is the site where the mother Goddess Parvati was born. Unlike the Ram Janma Bhoomi (Ayodhya) and Krishna Janma Bhoomi (Mathura), the Parvati Janma Bhoomi remains an unknown site.

It is also believed that the site where the lake is located now was used as a homa kund for Parvati's marriage with Shiva. As this place has two important mythological events associated - Parvati's birth and Parvati-Shiva marriage, the village is also named after this lake.

The temple is very small and just has the main shrine. The sanctum enshrines the idol of Parvati as kanya. The idols of Shiva and Parvati as a couple are also located in the sanctum. One more set of idols of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha are also found in a corner. The Shiv Linga named Aparneswar is the presiding deity of the temple. There are two Nandi idols facing towards the shrine. One divine rock (patthar) related to the wedding of Parvati and Shiva is also present in this temple.

A unique place - very secluded - good but small temple - never miss this place.

Happy travelling!
