Belur Math is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math. Located on the serene banks of the Hooghly River in the Howrah district, it lies about an hour’s drive from Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal.

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa was one of the most influential spiritual figures of 19th-century India. It is difficult to find anyone in the country unfamiliar with his teachings or with his extraordinary disciple, Swami Vivekananda. In memory of his Guru, Swami Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math, which today has branches across India and abroad. Its central headquarters came to be established at Belur, now known simply as Belur Math.

A visit to Belur Math, especially during the early morning or at sunset, leaves a lasting impression. Spread over nearly forty acres along the riverbank, the campus is peaceful and beautifully maintained. The gentle flow of the Hooghly, the open skies, and the quiet movement of devotees create an atmosphere that feels removed from the bustle of city life. Some visitors even arrive by boat across the river, adding to the sense of calm and reflection.

The principal attraction of the complex is the grand temple dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna. Completed in 1938, the temple is architecturally distinctive, blending elements of Hindu, Islamic, and Christian design, symbolising the universality of spiritual thought. Inside, a marble murti of Sri Ramakrishna is installed, and the sanctum preserves sacred relics associated with the order. The spacious prayer hall, with its high ceilings and symmetrical layout, enhances the meditative ambience.

Within the campus are several other important shrines and memorials. The old shrine houses early photographs of Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. There is a temple dedicated to Swami Vivekananda where his sacred relics are preserved, and another shrine for Sarada Devi, revered as Holy Mother. The room where Swami Vivekananda spent his final days has been carefully preserved, displaying personal objects used by him.

Samadhis of various presidents and monks of the Ramakrishna Order are located within the grounds. The bilva tree under which Swami Vivekananda is believed to have meditated is still maintained with reverence. There is also a small shrine dedicated to Swami Brahmananda, another direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna.

Whether or not one visits every landmark in Kolkata, Belur Math is a place that should not be missed. Beyond its architectural beauty, it offers a rare sense of quiet reflection and spiritual depth. Anyone travelling to Kolkata would do well to set aside time for this peaceful sanctuary by the river.

The Tallest Murugan of Chennai

Consecrated in March 2021, the 40 feet high Bala Murugan icon at Saveetha Medical College campus is the tallest image of Murugan in Chennai. Malaysia has 140 feet tall Murugan. In April 2022, the 146 feet tall image of Murugan was consecrated near Salem in Tamil Nadu. However, they are all stucco images. But, the one that we find on the college campus is a monolithic granite icon. Thus, it is the tallest stone icon of Murugan in the entire world. A stone weighing 320 tonnes was brought from Siruvambur near Wallajah, and it was carved to 140 tonnes to get this beautiful and gigantic sculpture. The entire temple complex is designed in the shape of the Devanagiri letter "Om", which can be appreciated in the aerial view.  The west-facing gigantic sculpture is located atop the star-shaped pedestal.
