Malleeswarar Temple, Mylapore, Chennai

Malleeswarar temple is the sixth Sapta Sthana (seven important temples) temple of Mylapore, in Chennai.

The temple is located in a small lane in Bazaar street near Karaneeswarar temple. The presiding deities of this small beautiful temple are Malleeswarar (Lord Shiva) and Maragadambal. The Shiva linga in this temple is huge.

There is a belief that if an unmarried person visits this temple, his/her marriage gets fixed.

It is one of the ancient temples of Chennai. Unfortunately, only very few people know about its existence.

Ganesha, Dakshinamurti, Lingodbhava, Brahma and Durga are found as the Koshta (niche) images in this temple.

Some of the sub-shrines and idols that are found include:

  • Maha Ganapati
  • Hanuman
  • Ayyappa
  • Subramanya with Valli and Devasena
  • Nataraja
  • Shaneeswara
  • Bhairava
  • Navagraha
  • Nalvar

The seven Sapta Sthana temples of Mylapore are:

1) Karaneeswarar Temple

2) Theerthapaleeswarar Temple

3) Velleswarar Temple

4) Virupaksheeswarar Temple

5) Vaaleswarar Temple

6) Malleswarar Temple
