Kodaikanal, as you all probably know, is one of the popular tourist destinations in India. Thousands and thousands of visitors go to this hilly town called as 'Princess of hillstations'. Most of them stay there for one or two days and just visit some of the well known places such as Bryant Park, Kodaikanal Lake and Coaker's Walk. But, Kodaikanal is not only about these popular sites which are always crowded. There are many more interesting but unexplored places in and around Kodaikanal. Let us see about one such rare site in this article.

Anju Veedu - if you translate this Tamil word in English, it would mean 'five houses'. It is said there were only five houses few years back in the forest in Elephant Valley. Hence, this place is called as Anju Veedu. Anju Veedu is a scenic place located in Elephant Valley which can be reached by a two kms walk through the forest and crossing the river Palar inside the forest. There is a beautiful waterfalls named as Anju Veedu Waterfalls or Upper Palar Waterfalls or Elephant Valley Waterfalls which can be reached after this long walk. The hilly area in this place is called as Vilpatti range of mountains. 

The Palar stream which originates from the Kodaikanal Lake is the origin for Anju Veedu waterfalls. The Elephant valley is an eco farm which is also visited by the tourists. This site is situated near Ganeshapuram village at a distance of around 25 kms. from the center of Kodaikanal town.

I myself have called Courtallam as the city of waterfalls in my blog. After visiting Kodaikanal, I realized that there are more number of waterfalls in Kodaikanal than Courtallam or probably any other town in India. The museum is located at  a distance of around 5 kms from the city center. It was founded in 1895 CE. Though it very small, it houses a lot of archaeological remains and flora and fauna samples of Kodai region. More than 300 species of orchids are maintained in this museum. The chemically preserved animals, birds and even human embryo are found in this museum. Some of the rare collections such as burial pot used by pre historian period people and Kuriji plant (Kurinji flower blossoms only once in every 12 years) add more attractions to this tiny beautiful museum.

Have you been to Kodaikanal? If your answer is yes, what all the places that you would have visited? After visiting Bryant Park, Coaker's Walk and Kodai lake and purchasing the so called home made chocolates, if you claim that you have visited Kodai, I am sorry; I would not agree. :-) There are lot more to visit in Kodaikanal. Vattakanal is a small village located at a distance of around 3 kms from Kodaikanal. Although it remains unknown to the regular travelers, it is sad that it has become infamously famous for bad reasons among youngsters. It is said that the youngsters stay in low cost lodges in Vattakanal mainly due to the availability of drugs here. As otherwise, the place is beautiful and the views are breathtaking. The route from Pambarpuram to Dolphin's Nose is through Vattakanal village. Vattakanal village has a waterfalls named Vattakanal Falls. People also call it as Pambar Falls. The water flow is good only during the rainy season. The waterfalls is situated in a scenic place.

Israels have this habit of sending youngsters to remote places on tour. You can find a lot of Israels travelling to Vattakanal. Some of them have made this as their home permanently. So, the locals call this village as 'Little Israel' too.

Go for a long walk amongst the forest to experience Vattakanal.

What is Coaker's Walk? It is not an ordinary pathway that you find in other cities. It is an one km long pedestrian path that runs along the edge of steep slopes. It is located near Bryant Park at the heart of Kodaikanal. It gives a spectacular views of the plains, nearby hills and valley of Pambar river. On a clear day, one could even get a distant sight of Madurai and Periyakulam. As the path was constructed by Lt. Coaker in 1872 CE, the place was named after him.

Bryant Park is a colorful attraction to Kodaikanal. It is located near the Kodai Lake at the heart of the town. The park which is spread for about 20.5 acres was established by H.D.Bryant, a British forest officer in 1908 CE. Hence, the park was named after him.

The park is a true botanical garden with the presence of about 325 species of trees and shrubs. More than 700 varieties of roses are found in a separate section in the park. There is a separate section for children's park.

Along with Kodai Lake, the Bryant Park is also a must visit place in Kodaikanal. Don't miss it!
