Vengaivasal Swarnapureeswarar Temple

Tiru Nageswaram Temple is a famous temple in Tamil Nadu. There, the milk that is offered for abhisheka to the diety turns into blue color. Similarly, there is this lesser-known temple of Lord Shiva located in the southern outskirts of Chennai, where the milk that is poured on Shiva Linga turns into blue color.

Vengaivasal - not many from Chennai would know about this locality. It's not a popular one. It is located at a distance of about 10 kms from Tambaram. In Vengaivasal, after passing through many narrow streets and lanes, we could reach to Swarnapureeswarar Temple. (Please refer to the Google map embedded at the end of the article to find the exact location.)

It is a modern-day temple built in the first decade of the 21st century CE. However, Shiva Linga and Nandi are few centuries years old. They were discovered from the land near the village tank. Ultimately the villagers decided to build this temple. Initially, they wanted to name the deity as Vengeeswarar, but later they called him Swarnapureeswarar.

It's a small temple having the entrance at the west side but the sanctum facing the east direction. The old Shiva Linga, which is around two feet tall and considerably wide, is enshrined in the sanctum. A new Nandi idol is installed in front of Linga. The old Nandi idol is located at a corner.

Mangalambika, the Goddess, is found in a small south-facing shrine. She is in the standing posture and she has four arms.

Bala Ganapati and Bala Murugan are found at the entrance of the sanctum.

In Ardha Mandapa, a big bronze idol of Ayyappa is kept. In the sanctum, the small bronze idols of Uma and Shiva seated on Nandi are found.

The sub-shrines of Kanni Moola Ganapati, Navagraha, Bhairava and Bhakta Anjaneya are found in the prakara.

Nardana Vinayaka, Dakshinamurti, Lingodbhava, Brahma and Vishnu Durga are found as the Koshta (niche) deities around the sanctum. Chandikeswara is found in his usual location near Durga.

The holy trees of peepul and neem (Arasu and Vembu) are found together, which is believed to be very auspicious. A Vinayaka idol and few serpent icons are kept under these trees.

The small lotus pond is located adjacent to the temple. Shiv Linga and Nandi were found originally near this pond.

Happy travelling.
