Kodaikanal is one of the most popular summer destinations of India. Thousands and thousands of travelers visit this popular hillstation named as 'Princess of hillstations'. It is located near Dindigul in Tamil Nadu state of India. After Ooty, it is the most visited hill resorts in Tamil Nadu state.

Unlike the other hillstations where only viewpoints are present, this extraordinary hill resort has a lot of place of interest for tourists such as viewpoints, waterfalls, forests, trekking routes, temples and heritage spots. Let us explore an important site called Dum Dum Rock View Point in this article.

Kodaikanal, the princess of hillstations, can be reached through Batalakundu-Kodai Ghat Road. There is a spot called 'Dum Dum Rock' immediately after climbing the Ghat Road. A view tower is located in this spot, which would provide you the spectacular view of Western Ghats, Manjalaru Dam and importantly Thalaiyur waterfalls.

Almost all the tourists travelling to Kodaikanal would stop in this viewpoint to take snaps and enjoy the natural beauty. However, not everyone would notice the distant view of Thalaiyur waterfalls, which appears across the valley as a long thin white strip of cascading water. Of course, it is visible only on a clear day without fog or mist. Only few among those view this waterfalls would realize the fact that it is the highest waterfalls in Tamil Nadu state and the third highest falls in India.

Thalaiyur falls is 975 feet tall and is located on Palani hills, at a distance of around 13 kms from Dum Dum Rock View Point. As it appears as a thin silver line from this site, it is also called as 'Rat Tail Falls'. The spectacular waterfalls remains inaccessible to the general public. There is no proper road to reach the site and it would be a challenging trekking. As the foot of the falls, there is a temple dedicated to Kamakshi. As per the legend, the Goddess Kamakshi was born here and she is called as Moonkilanai Kamakshi in this site. The place is called as Amma Machchu.

Even the Dum Dum Rock has a mythological legend associated with it. As per the belief, Lord Subramanya used to visit this rock during his entourage to the nearby Palani hills. The inhabitants still remember this event by praying in this site. Along with the prayer, they play drums with huge noise. Hence, the place is called as Dum Dum Rock.

Happy travelling.

  1. Dude, the waterfall is huge! Wonderful it would be to be there on a holiday! Kodai is one place that I always wanted to visit, but since it is very far from Chandigarh, I have not been able to. I hope I get a chance to be there soon.
