Papanasar Temple:

Papanasar temple is the most popular site of the town. It is very popular temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and is very ancient and huge. Thousands of people visit this grand temple located on the banks of the river.

Thalai Anai:

Thalai Anai is a small scenic dam located near Papanasar temple.

Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary:

Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Sanctuary is the second largest protected area in the state. It is the house of about 70 tigers and 70 leopards.

Lower Dam:

Those do not visit any other places in Papanasam would definitely visit lower dam and upper dam. The lower dam is the first among those twin dams which is very popular in this region.

Agastiar Falls:

Who would not enjoy the beauty of waterfalls which is located amidst forests on the Western Ghats hills, and importantly not crowded? Agastiar Waterfalls is a small but beautiful falls located in this region.

Agastiar Temple:

It is unusual to find a temple for a saint. Agastya is considered as an important saint in the southern part of Tamil Nadu state. Few temples dedicated to him are found in the region. There is a small temple dedicated to Agastya near Agastiar Falls.

Kalyana Teertham Falls:

If you feel happy after visiting Agastiar falls and want to visit much better place, there is an immediate option. Trek for half an hour to reach Kalyana Teertham waterfalls and river for an nonpolluting pure sight of nature.  


Karaiyar Dam:

Karaiyar dam is also called as Upper Dam. It is one of the most popular picnic spots for the locals in this region. 

Chori Muthu Ayyanar Temple:

Chori Muthu Ayyanar temple is a rare temple dedicate to Ayyanar. The temple is full of village deities. It is impossible to find so many village deities in a single temple.

Servalar Dam:

Servalar Dam is a small beautiful reservoir located near Chori Muthu Ayyanar temple. 


Bana Teertham Falls:

Bana Teertham waterfalls is one of the most picturesque and pleasant waterfalls in southern Tamil Nadu. It is located in such as scenic spot that one has to travel on boat in the river surround by hills on three sides. You can end your Papanasam travel in this spot.

If you have one more day, you can visit Manimutharu falls and Manjolai tea estate too.

Bana Teertham Waterfalls - Heaven on the earth

Unlike other waterfalls in South India, Bana Teertham is a perennial waterfalls. Water flows in this magnificent falls throughout the year. However, the best season to visit the place is November and December.

This waterfalls is popular in southern Tamil Nadu. However, it remains unknown to the other parts of India. The famous movie 'Roja' was shot in this scenic location.

The place is located at the other end of Kalakkad Mundanthurai forest. To reach Bana Teertham waterfalls, you need to take a boat ride for 20 minutes where you would get to enjoy the surrounding spectacular Western Ghats hills. Another 15 minutes trek would take you to the waterfalls. However, it depends upon the Forest department to allow the visitors till the waterfalls. 

The spectacular waterfalls located within the forest range and surrounded by hills is a must-visit.

Kalakkad Mundanthurai tiger reserve forest is the second largest protected area in Tamil Nadu state of India. It was formed in 1988 CE by combining two wild life sanctuaries, Kalakkad sanctuary and Mundanthurai sanctuary. It is situate in a very scenic hilly area of Western Ghats. About 14 rivers and 7 major dams are located within this forest. 

Some of the beautiful locations such as Agastyar falls, Bana Teertham waterfalls, Manimutharu falls, etc. are located  in this forest area. The entire regions is full of abundant natural resources such as rivers, waterfalls, streams and hills. To add more charm, some of the popular temples are located very near to this area. Manjolai tea estate is an important attraction near this site.

Although it is a tiger reserve and it is claimed that there are more than 70 tigers and 70 leopards in this forest, it is very rare to get sight of them. You can get to see a lot deer, monkeys, peacocks, birds and giant squirrels. It's a nice place to enjoy the beauty of nature; it's one of very few places which has not been polluted or commercialized.

Let us explore an important temple located in Karaiyar area in Papanasam - Chori Muthu Ayyanar temple.

Chori Muthu Ayyanar temple is a very important and popular temple in Papanasam and surrounding regions. Ayyanar is worshiped as a village deity; he is none other than Shasta, the son of Lord Shiva. Lord Ayyappan is the incarnation of Shasta or Ayyanar.

The temple is large with so many village deities and many sub shrines. It is located well on the banks of the river Tamrabharani.

The main shrine houses the main deity Chori Muthu Ayyanar along with his two consorts, Poorna and Pushkala. Generally, the deity's mount is found facing the main shrine. However, in this temple, there are many statues such as elephant, horses and bulls found facing the main shrine. The idols of Sapta Matas are also found within the main shrine.

Adjacent to him, the shrines of Sangili Bhoodathar - a popular village deity of southern Tamil Nadu and Mahalinga (Shiva) are found. A small idol of the sage Agastya is also located in Sangili Bhoodathar's shrine.

The backside of the main shrine has the idol of Sangili Bhoodathar Balakan. It might be the son of Bhoodathar. He is also a village deity.

There is an important shrine in this temple with so many village deities - Pechi, Sudalai Madan, Brahma Rakshashi, Irulayee and Irulappan.

On the banks of the river, the sub-shrine of another rare village deity named Pattavarayan along with his consorts Bommakka and Dimmakka is found.

The bas-relief image of Mandiramurti, a guardian village deity and two separate shrines of Doosi Madaswamy and Thalavai Madaswamy are also located in this temple.

Not sure if we can get to see so many village deities in one temple anywhere else.

As the sage Agastya's tales are associated with the Podhigai hill region, there are temples dedicated to him found across Tirunelveli, Ambasamudra, Papanasam and surrounding areas.There is one such temple dedicated to the sage in Papanasam town. It is located very near to Agastyar waterfalls. It is a small temple with two main shrines - Agastya and Subramanya-Valli-Devasena. There is a small idol of Ganesha also in this temple.

Beware of monkeys inside as well as outside this temple.

Agastiar Falls is a small but scenic waterfalls located in Papanasam. If you trek the hillock above the Agastiar falls, you will reach to Kalyana Teertham. It is a waterfalls and stream flowing down towards Agastiar falls. This place is much more beautiful than Agastiar falls. The water over here is crystal clear and appears to be much cleaner. People are allowed to take bath in the stream but not allowed to reach upto waterfalls due to security reasons. 

The statues of Agastya and his wife Lobamudra installed on a rock near the stream look very attractive.

The entire region is extremely beautiful; it is completely surrounded by Western Ghats hillocks; the ultimate sound of waterfalls and the divine feel due to proximity of temple.

In this place, a small temple of Shiva named Kodi Lingeswarar is found. Apart from Shiva Linga and his consort Loka Nayaki in separate shrines, the idols of Ganesha, Kartikeya and Agastya are also found in this temple. There are some beautiful miniature bas-relief images such as Narsimha, Krishna with four arms and playing flute, Uma and Maheswara on Rishabha, etc. on the temple walls.

Krishnammal was a lady who spent most of her time in this hillock. She is considered as a Siddha by devotees. Her ashram is also found in this region.

A serene, silent, peaceful and exceptionally beautiful location. Don't miss to visit this place.
