Delhi, the capital city of India, is a combination old and new. It has a lot of important sites of historical and mythological importance to explore. Let me introduce you to an important temple located in Delhi. Although it is popular among the locals of Delhi, it remains unknown to the rest of India.

Yogmaya temple aka Jogmaya temple is located in Mehrauli area of Delhi city. It is believed to be one of the few temples that exist since the period of Pandavs of famous Mahabharat epic. (For those who do not know, it is believed that Delhi was the city of Indraprastha ruled by Pandavs of Mahabharat). As per the belief, this temple of Mother Goddess was built by Pandavs themselves after their victory in the Mahabharat battle.

The temple, located very near to the famous monument Qutb Minar, is nowadays a small temple. The current structure of the temple was built in 1827 AD. Historically, the temple was first renovated during the reign of Mughal ruler Akbar.

Maya, as per the mythology, was the sister of Lord Krishna. The temple has a sanctum sanctorum that houses the main idol of Yogmaya made of black stone placed in a marble well of 1 foot depth. There is a shikara (tower) on top of the sanctum sanctorum.

The annual festival of flower sellers famously called as Phool Walon Ki Sair is an integral part of this ancient temple.

Happy travelling.
