Chintadripet Adi Pureeswarar Temple


The twin temples of Chintadripet area in Chennai city of South India were built by a dubash working under the British East India Company in 1740s. Hence, these two temples which are dedicated to Adipureeswarar (Shiva) and Adi Kesava (Vishnu) are called as Company shrines.

Adipureeswarar temple, one of the two twin temples, has big Shiv Linga as the presiding deity. The entrance of santum has Ganesha and Murugan idols on either sides. The east facing sanctum has big and beautiful dwarapal idols in the entrance. The Goddess Tripura Sundari is found in a separate south facing shrine.


This temple has dhwajastambha, Nandi and bali peetha in front of the main shrine. Also, the idols of
SundaraValampuri Vinayak and Murugan are found in the entrance of the main shrine. The idols/sub
shrines of Surya,Ganesh, 63 Nayanmars, bronze utsav deities, important Shiva devotees, the king
Cheraman, Nalvar, Ganapati, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Naga, Murugan with his consorts Valli and Devasena, Palani Andavan, bronze idol of Arumugam, Shankaracharya, Agastya, Valluvar, Ramalinga, Kachiappa, Kumaraguruparar, Bhairav,Thayumanavar, Chandikeshwara and Chidambaram Swamigal are found in this temple.


The wall surrounding the sanctum has niche images of Ganesha, Dakshinamurti, Vishnu, Brahma and  Durga. The temple also has a separate shrine for Shasta with his consorts Poorna and Pushkala. There is another separate shrine dedicated to Adi Vinayak.

A tank common to both the temples is found outside the temple.
