Tiruvottiyur Tyagarajar and Vadivudai Amman Temple - Summary

Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu state of India, is considered the gateway to South India. This city has a lot of tourist spots, including many ancient temples. Out of all the temples in and around Chennai city, as far as my knowledge goes, Tyagarajar and Vadivudai Amman temple of Tiruvottiyur should be the oldest and biggest temple.

Tiruvottiyur is a locality in the North Chennai region, which is an ancient town. The locality is famous due to the gigantic temple of Thyagaraja. This huge Hindu temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This is one of the 275 important temples of Lord Shiva and is around 1300 years old. Lord Shiva is found in this temple in three primary forms - formless, physical form, and also in indescribable form. The goddess, Vadivudai Amman, is mighty and one of the three prominent goddesses of the Chennai region.

The temple's main shrine has the big Shiv Linga named Adi Pureeswarar. Hence, this temple is also called Adi Pureeswarar temple. Adjacent to the main shrine, the shrine of Tyagarajar is located. Vadivudai Amman is seen in a separate shrine. Apart from these three main shrines, there are a lot of shrines in this temple. Some notable ones are the 27-star Shiva shrine and the Tiruvotteeswarar shrine. The temple has a tree that is supposed to be 1300 years old.

The seven-tiered temple tower and the beautiful sculptures of this ancient temple are some highlights of this great Shiva temple. The temple is also historically rich, as there are a lot of historical incidents have happened in this temple. There are two enormous tanks for this temple, one within the temple complex and the other outside.

Happy travelling.

  2. Excellent Article and Blog series. I visit Tiruvottiyur Vadivudai amman temple very frequently. I always used to search for Sthala Purana book or something related to that in and around the temple, but never found one (surprising...) even enquired for any guide who can take us around the temple and explain the history behind each artifact. While searching in net I found this page and got to know good details about the temple and temples inside temple.

Thank you so much Krishnakumar. God Bless you.
